Ephesians 5:18-20

Be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

God Most High, thank you for the signs of your power and grace, found even in the wilderness, even in the midst of difficulty. As we receive encouragement, comfort, tenderness, and compassion from you, help us to make your joy complete by working together to share your love. Amen.

Opening Song

Hymn # 221 O Sacred Head, Now Wounded

prayers of the community and lord's prayer

(adapted slightly from Feasting on the Word Worship Companion for this Sunday)

Saving God,

you are the giver of life, the source of deepest compassion, the fountain of eternal life. Therefore we pray to you. Hear our prayers both scripted and unscripted, aloud and silent, as we come before now.

For all who are thirsty -- thirsty for a life of meaning, thirsty for a word of grace, thirst for a drink of water ...

For all who are weary -- weary from life's long journey, weary from quarrels and fighting, weary from pain or grief ...

For all who are broken -- broken by sin and suffering, broken by life's disappointments, broken by acts of violence ...

For all who are ill -- ill in body, ill in mind, ill in spirit

Living God, through your Spirit, pour your love into our hearts, your grace into our lives, your healing into our world, until the earth is filled with your glory as the waters cover the sea.

The glory of our risen Lord, Jesus Christ, who taught us to pray saying:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts,

as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but

deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power

and the glory, forever.

Sermon - Joyful Humility

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty,

Maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

and born of the virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died and was buried;

he descended into hell.

The third day he rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

Closing Song

Hymn # 819 Be Still, My Soul

Go now in the grace, mercy, and peace of God, the Father

the love of Jesus Christ, His one and only Son

and in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit

both now and forever
